JW Marriott to Open First Portuguese Hotel in Algarve’s Palmares Ocean Living & Golf Resort

JW Marriott Makes Portuguese Debut at Palmares Ocean Living & Golf
JW Marriott is set to bring its signature blend of timeless luxury and mindful hospitality to Portugal, announcing a landmark opening in the heart of the Algarve. Scheduled for 2028, the brand’s first Portuguese property will be nestled within the breathtaking Palmares Ocean Living & Golf Resort, where the Atlantic meets rolling hills and refined leisure.
With 172 rooms, a world-class spa, and direct access to a Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course, the hotel promises a serene yet elevated escape that celebrates the Algarve’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Architecture in Harmony with the Landscape
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning RCR Arquitectes, the hotel’s architectural language is woven into the landscape itself. “The objective is to create a unique place where architecture is the landscape and landscape is the architecture,” explains Rafael Aranda, founding partner of RCR.
The buildings blend seamlessly into the terrain, positioned between the Michelin-starred Al-Sud restaurant, the golf course, and panoramic Atlantic views.
Interiors Inspired by Moorish Elegance and Portuguese Craft
Interior design is handled by Goddard Littlefair, who draw inspiration from the Algarve’s rich textures and artisanal heritage. “Our goal was to create interiors that feel deeply connected to the landscape,” says Martin Goddard, director of the studio.
Expect tactile materials, natural finishes, and indoor-outdoor continuity, echoing Moorish influences while rooting the experience in Portuguese authenticity.
Wellness Meets Coastal Soul
The resort will feature a holistic wellness sanctuary blending traditional Portuguese healing with modern luxury. Guests can unwind in tranquil treatment rooms, energize in the state-of-the-art fitness center, or soak in the calm by indoor and outdoor pools.
Every detail is curated for rejuvenation—whether through therapy, movement, or stillness.
A Golfer’s Dream by the Atlantic
Golfers will be captivated by the 27-hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., offering stunning views of the Bay of Lagos. A local touch? A small regional train runs along the coast, adding charm to each round.
Days can begin with breakfast on a private terrace and flow into golf sessions, beach escapes, or relaxing moments in the JW Garden.
Setting a New Benchmark for Luxury in the Algarve
“This hotel will be the cornerstone for elevating Palmares,” said Francisco Sottomayor, CEO of Norfin Group. “Every detail reflects our commitment to creating a sophisticated environment where guests feel immersed in the spirit of this place.”
Timothy Walton, SVP of Marriott Development in Western Europe, adds: “This is a strategic addition to our luxury portfolio in Portugal. We’re proud to introduce the JW Marriott brand to such a stunning coastal setting.”
Branded Residences for Year-Round Living
In addition to the hotel, the resort will offer 133 branded JW Marriott residences, giving those who fall in love with Palmares the chance to make it home.
Just minutes away lies the historic town of Lagos, with its cobbled streets, artisan markets, and golden cliffs at Ponta da Piedade. After a day of discovery, guests can return to the calming rhythm of coastal luxury living.
This debut marks not only a milestone for JW Marriott in Portugal, but a new benchmark in destination-driven hospitality—where landscape, culture, and comfort intertwine seamlessly.
